"The goal of the project is an attempt to restore the organizing function of tapestry in a space, while preserving its artistic autonomy. To create and search for unique relationship between tapestry, the wall and space, with the aid of technical means, such as LED lighting and light-conducting fiber PMMA.
To achieve full expression I use the woven forms of expressive silhouettes while their holes, cracks, slits show the viewer what is behind them. I vary the shape of the outer contour to connect the object with its background. I intend for my work to be subjected to modulated variability, though excessively not absorbing the viewer's attention, nor dissipating his or her contact with the object; to be so little different in every next moment, for each glance. Such a plan enables a merger of two qualities: the materiality of the tapestry with the immateriality of light, material durability with constantly changing context. In Polish the title „Po-Światy” written in this way could be understood in two different ways: glows or succeeding Creations”.

Light and Darkness IN me
Solo exhibition, curated by Marta Kowalewska, selected works created during 30 years of my activity. Some came from the collections of the Central Textile Museum, but most of them were my works.
The exhibition occupied the entire 3rd floor of the museum and lasted about 3 months. It was accompanied by a poster, invitations and a catalogue. TVP 3 devoted time to her in Informator Kulturalny. The exhibition was commented on in the foreign press and on many blogs. The proximity of Magdalena Abakanowicz's exhibition - Metamorphism gave it additional prestige.
Włodzimierz Cygan drawing on the available sources and elaborating on the fundamental values and laws of textile structure, he continues to develop his own, unique language. He manipulates the two primary structural elements of warp and weft to utterly redefine their meaning. In a way, he brings out the very skeleton of the woven structure by rendering visible the warp underlying the weft and shaping it into unobvious forms” – Marta Kowalewska, exhibition curator.
The exhibition will present the works of a renowned artist from Łódź, Prof. Włodzimierz Cygan, thus falling within the framework of the Museum’s exhibition cycle devoted to the most prominent representatives of Polish textile arts, recognised as such both domestically and abroad.
Cygan’s works are manifestations of the artistic potential found in the very rudiments of fabric itself. The artist is always on the search for new formal solutions, exploring the possibilities of expanding his means of expression by combining the traditional structures of fabric with modern-day technologies. The manifest focus of his works falls on that which usually constitutes the invisible skeleton concealed under thickly woven weft – the warp. It is there that the viewer’s attention is directed and shape is defined. The artist does not shy away from experimenting with materials other than traditionally associated with fabric, in particular light transmitting fibres (so-called optic fibres), whose presence adds to the sense of mystery engendered by the works and invites the viewers to reflect on the ungraspable and the mystical.
After graduating from university, Professor Włodzimierz Cygan engaged in independent artistic work with a particular focus on artistic fabric. He has been involved in numerous exhibitions, workshops and symposia devoted to the art of fibre. In 1991, he established the “Text and Textil – the art of fibre” magazine, where he worked as publisher and editor-in-chief. Since 1992, he has been a member of the editorial team for “Fibres & Textiles in Eastern Europe”.

IN ITSELF
Nature constitutes for the artist an inexhaustible source not only of inspiration but also of the essential elements needed for life - both biological and spiritual. Forms of the recent cycle – Tapping, have an explicit organic provenance. Directed upward, extending from the main axis fine lines of warp create subtle drawing, going beyond the main body of the piece in the form of loose fibers. They give the work an extraordinary fragility and lightness. Vertical silhouette of the works carries connotations of the totemic shapes, harking back to the civilization of ancient cultures, interpersonal relations, mystical bonds. The spiritual element perfectly expresses the light used in the construction. Fiber optics are like the bloodstream, breathing the refreshing spirit into the bodily form. With these artistic measures objects acquire dualistic nature. During the day, the material shell stimulates the sense of touch, twilight reveals their immateriality.
